PETRONAS bags Malaysia Digital Experience of the Year - Oil & Gas at the Asian Experience Awards 2022

i-PIMS addresses the pain points of pipeline operators and offers an end-to-end pipeline integrity management system.

Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) has clinched the Malaysia Digital Experience of the Year - Oil & Gas at the recently held Asian Experience Awards 2022 for its one-stop integrated pipeline integrity management system, Integrated Pipeline Integrity Assurance Solutions (i-PIMS). The prestigious Asian Experience Awards programme aims to highlight the ingenious initiatives of creative companies delivering meaningful brand experiences to their stakeholders.

i-PIMS is an innovative in-house solution used across PETRONAS’ businesses, which replaces the previously used off-the-shelf applications. It is designed to address the pain points of PETRONAS’ pipeline operators, offering end-to-end pipeline integrity management and assurance through its descriptive and predictive analytics capabilities.

PETRONAS Upstream Centre of Excellence Vice President, Chen Kah Seong said that i-PIMS improves Process Cycle Efficiency in Pipeline Integrity Management. The time and effort spent on managing pipeline integrity in the past can now be diverted to other operational and even strategic matters, as well as people development.

The development of this win-win solution started in 2018 through a situational assessment with the objective of gauging the pain points against the then pipeline system and tools used, as well as the available pipeline integrity applications in the market. From the situational assessment outcome, the future-proof solution was to have a new and sustainable pipeline integrity system to address the pain points and gaps in the existing systems and tools.

Since its launch in 2020, i-PIMS has helped PETRONAS in making timely and informed decisions with regard to pipeline risk reduction and control measures with its descriptive and predictive analytics features. This ensures not only the identification of pipeline threats at their infant stage to prevent potential asset failure, which can eventually lead to people, environment, asset and reputational loss and impacts but also helps businesses reduce pipeline inspection and maintenance spending.

In sustaining i-PIMS’ relevance to the respective businesses, the product has continued to progress by being agile in adopting the latest technology and best practices in the industry. This is reflected in its recent addition of a machine learning module in i-PIMS which was launched a year after, in September 2021, and Digital Twin features in its upcoming release.

i-PIMS enables businesses to manage their pipeline integrity information in a user-friendly interface, making it accessible anytime, anywhere and has been proven to provide a pleasant user experience with high utilisation of the system.

As of today, there are over 400 pipelines with a total length of over 10,000 km that have been successfully registered in i-PIMS involving various PETRONAS subsidiaries in Malaysia. i-PIMS aspires to become a single pipeline integrity management system to be used at all of PETRONAS’ operations worldwide.

PETRONAS has recently started to promote i-PIMS to other oil and gas partners and operators around the world through one of its commercialisation initiatives, with the intention of realising one of PETRONAS’ aspirations of generating 30% of its revenue from new non-traditional businesses by 2030.

PETRONAS is a dynamic global energy group with presence in over 100 countries and produces and delivers energy and solutions that power society’s progress in a responsible and sustainable manner.
