University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering honoured at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026

The organisation integrated AI, cybersecurity readiness, and energy analytics research into academic programmes.

University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering (UNIMY) received the IT - Education award at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026. The recognition reflected the institution’s work in integrating artificial intelligence, cybersecurity research, and sustainability-focused technology laboratories into its academic programmes.

The institution structured its education model around industry participation and practical technical training. Programmes incorporate professional certifications, laboratory-based learning, and direct collaboration with technology partners. Industry practitioners also participate in teaching and technical discussions, exposing students to current practices in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data systems.

One major development involved the introduction of the Bachelor’s in Artificial Intelligence programme. The degree addresses Malaysia’s need for professionals in artificial intelligence development, machine learning, and intelligent systems. Coursework covers AI fundamentals and specialised areas such as agentic AI, preparing graduates for roles linked to Malaysia’s digital economy.

Industry collaboration forms a central component of the university’s technology initiatives. A partnership with i-Sprint established Malaysia’s first Application Post-Quantum Cryptography Migration Lab. The facility provides training in quantum-resistant encryption and cybersecurity systems used in financial institutions and technology organisations. Students and external participants gain exposure to security technologies used by more than 170 financial institutions worldwide.

Another collaboration with Squarecloud led to the development of an ESG Lab and Centre of Excellence at the university. The facility uses an artificial intelligence-driven platform for energy optimisation and building performance analytics. Postgraduate researchers conduct work related to machine learning, building systems, and energy data analysis within the laboratory environment.

Academic and industry partnerships support the broader technology ecosystem surrounding the university. These collaborations include institutions such as University of West of England, Bristol, Oxford Brookes University, University of Brighton, Northumbria University, and Shandong Polytechnic. Industry and certification partners include Alibaba Cloud, CompTIA, Fortinet, i-Sprint, Masverse, and NetAssist.

Through certification programmes, virtual laboratories, and applied research facilities, students graduate with both academic qualifications and industry-recognised credentials that support entry into technology-related careers.
