Sarawak Metro bags win at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025

Its KUTS Project is a bold step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Sarawak Metro, a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation, took home the Smart City - Transportation category at the prestigious Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025 for the milestones achieved by its Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project in developing a sustainable public transportation system.

KUTS is an innovative development that aims to modernise Kuching’s public transportation through environmentally friendly, efficient, and technologically advanced solutions. It is set to enhance commuter convenience, reduce environmental impact, and drive economic growth by integrating cutting-edge transportation solutions.

The backbone of the project is the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART), complemented by a network of feeder buses ensuring seamless ‘First and Last Mile Connectivity’ within Greater Kuching. Sarawak Metro has already pioneered hydrogen bus services in Southeast Asia, operating three trial buses to familiarise passengers with eco-friendly transport solutions.

The ART system integrates bus, train, and tram technologies into a seamless, urban public transportation solution. By incorporating a Signalling-and-Control System, virtual track technology (eliminating the need for fixed rails), and transit signal priority for traffic management, KUTS is redefining urban public transport mobility, addressing the growing need for safer and more efficient public transport whilst navigating the challenges of mixed-traffic urban environments.

Beyond reducing emissions and improving urban mobility, KUTS positions Sarawak at the forefront of sustainable transportation innovation in Southeast Asia.

“By redefining public transport in Kuching, KUTS serves as a model for other cities, demonstrating how visionary planning and technological advancements can shape a greener and more connected future,” the company said.
