Why 4.5 million Australians skip insurance claims over premiums
The most commonly skipped claims were for home and car insurance.
About 4.5 million Australians have chosen not to make insurance claims in the past year due to fears of higher premiums, according to new research from Finder.
The survey of 1,017 Australians found that 21% avoided filing a claim because they were worried their premiums would increase afterward.
The most commonly skipped claims were for home and car insurance, with 9% each saying they held off.
Another 7% did not claim on their health insurance, whilst 4% avoided pet insurance claims.
Finder’s personal finance and insurance specialist Taylor Blackburn said many Australians are caught in a difficult position — paying for insurance but feeling they can’t afford to use it.
He warned that skipping claims could lead to bigger financial problems if small issues grow into major repairs or expenses.
Blackburn said the findings highlight the growing pressure on household budgets and urged Australians to review their coverage, compare prices, and keep emergency savings for unexpected costs.
Finder’s data came from its Consumer Sentiment Tracker, a monthly nationally representative survey of over 60,000 respondents, with the latest results based on 1,017 participants from June 2025.
