China’s solar capacity up 30.54% in Q1

It accounted for nearly 70% of the total power additions during the period.

China added 59.71 gigawatts (GW) of solar power in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a 30.54% increase from the previous year.

According to Mercom, this brought the country’s cumulative solar capacity to 950 GW as of March 2025. The National Energy Administration also said that solar comprised 69.65% of China’s total power capacity addition in Q1.

Beijing also added 14.62 GW of wind, 2.13 GW of hydroelectric, and 9.25 GW of thermal power in the first three months.

Major power generation companies invested around $18.09b in power projects, down 2.5% from the previous year. Meanwhile, investment in grid expansion was up 24.8% to $13.08b.
