Over 900 GW of wind capacity to be installed by 2030

Specifically, offshore wind is showing a promising growth potential.

Over 900 gigawatts (GW) of wind power capacity is projected to be installed from 2025 to 2030, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

The council’s latest Global Wind Report expects a compound average growth rate of 8.8% for the wind industry, which means another 981 GW of wind energy capacity across the globe by 2030.

A total of 117 GW of wind energy was installed globally in 2024, with China leading the market with nearly 80,000 MW.

GWEC projects around 138 GW of new capacity will be added in 2025, 140 GW in 2026, 160 GW in 2027, 167 GW in 2028,183 GW in 2029, and 194 GW in 2030.

A key factor to this forecast is the growth of offshore wind, the council said.

From 2025-2030, GWEC sees offshore wind rising from 16 GW in 2025 to 34 GW, with offshore moving from 11.8% of new capacity to 17.5% of new capacity by the end of the decade.
