Design and engineering innovation paved the way to fast-track project delivery with Exyte

The company wins in this year’s Malaysia International Business Awards.

Exyte is known for their capabilities in providing industry solutions in the field of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) for high-tech facilities such as semiconductor manufacturing. As a highly technical field that requires the best in talent and management, Exyte has catered to a long list of tech giants and more recently worked with Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik Aktiengesellschaft (AT&S), a global leader in manufacturing high-end printed circuit boards and IC substrates.

Owing to their presence in Europe and Asia, AT&S develops, produces, and provides high-tech solutions for their global partners engaged in the areas of communication, computer and consumer electronics, mobility, industry, and medical technology. For the significant role that they played in AT&S’ expansion into Malaysia, Exyte received the Industrial Construction Award at the 2023 Malaysia International Business Awards.

The awards programme, presented by Asian Business Review, celebrates the success and achievements of companies in Malaysia to push the limits of innovation and technology to bring success to their operations, and Exyte distinguished themselves with their project collaboration with AT&S.

Working under an Engineering-Procurement & Construction Management (EPCM) Contract basis and General Contract (GC) basis, Exyte is working with AT&S at their Kulim site to deliver a new manufacturing campus to enhance the company’s production capacity as a market leader in high-end IC Substrate field. The company is using its in-house design team of architects, civil, and structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and process engineers from conceptualisation to the detailed design stages. This is one of several notable projects that the company has carried out for AT&S over the years to expand their manufacturing footprint across Asia and Europe.

The Malaysian manufacturing facility consists of buildings located on a plot measuring 58 acres, with buildings such as 4-storey production buildings, a 7-storey administration building, multiple buildings dedicated to storage for both safe and hazardous materials, a centralised utility building, a substation, a wastewater treatment building present across the property.

Despite the very tight schedule of just 17 months, Exyte Malaysia and AT&S Malaysia worked on the extremely large-scale project so efficiently that they were able to accomplish the installation of the roof deck and particularly, the first tool move-in milestone in February 2023, two months ahead of schedule.

Navigating through the challenges posed by both supply chain and labour availability issues in a hot local market, the project required Exyte to pre-empt and plan out the necessary steps to accommodate AT&S’ requests and stay on schedule. Another impressive feat that Exyte achieved with this project is its safety performance, as the Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of 0.04 accomplished thus far was 98% lower than Malaysia’s targeted TRIR (2.55) for the construction industry. This project was recognized by Malaysia’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) for its safety performance last year. This was accomplished while complying with the required COVID-19 measures during the transition from the pandemic to the endemic phase.

AT&S stated that upon completion, the new campus will generate 6,000 high-value jobs such as technicians, engineers, and other related technical occupations. The facility is expected to produce high-end IC Substrates that support the fast-growing end-markets in automotive, 5G mobility, and secure device segments enabled by digitalisation, miniaturisation, and electrification securing the long-term prospects in terms of growing needs.

Congratulations to the project teams from Exyte and AT&S on winning this award.
