Oracle CloudWorld 2024: EHR systems likely to fade as AI takes on healthcare

Intelligence systems to overtake.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada --- As AI becomes more prevalent in healthcare, electronic health record (EHR) systems will likely "fade into the background," replaced by intelligence systems, said Mike Sicilia, Executive Vice President of Oracle Global Industries.

These intelligence systems, whilat capable of listening to both patients and providers and taking swift actions, will not replace doctors, Sicilia added.

"I think they will greatly assist, not just with automating routine medical tasks, but also in providing clinical diagnostic assistance as we move into more advanced areas of work," he told the press on the sidelines of Oracle CloudWorld 2024, held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

During the event, Sicilia introduced Oracle’s newly launched tool, the Oracle Clinical Digital Assistant, which combines generative AI and clinical intelligence.

The tool captures and analyzes conversations between physicians and patients and automatically generates a structured note.

The digital assistant will also suggest actions that the AI infers from the physician-patient conversation.

For example, when a healthcare provider informs a patient of a follow-up scheduled for next Tuesday, the digital assistant will propose that action at the end of the visit, allowing for adjustments and approval in the system.

Seema Verma, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Oracle Health and Life Sciences, stated that the tool has enabled doctors to engage more meaningfully with their patients by allowing them to focus on the patient, rather than a computer screen, thereby strengthening the physician-patient relationship.
