Mandaya Hospital Group chief executive honoured at Asian Management Excellence Awards 2025
The company has developed multiple advanced centres of excellence at Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri under Dr Benedictus Widaja’s leadership.
Mandaya Hospital Group CEO Dr Benedictus Widaja was recognised as the Indonesia Executive of the Year - Healthcare at the coveted Asian Management Excellence Awards 2025 for showcasing his exceptional leadership and transformative vision in healthcare, addressing critical gaps through innovation and excellence.
As the President Director of the organisation, Dr Ben spearheads the rapid growth of the organisation, overseeing the operations of its several hospitals. His leadership has also enabled Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri (MRHP), which is amongst its networks, to become a national referral centre.
These achievements did not come with its share of challenges. With MRHP being a new hospital with relatively low brand recognition, competing for highly skilled clinicians, building trust amongst Indonesian patients, and preventing outbound medical tourism were critical hurdles. To address these, Dr Ben developed groundbreaking centres of excellence that combine comprehensive care, advanced technologies, and exceptional patient experiences.
Amongst these is the Mandaya Breast Center, a fully integrated breast care facility offering end-to-end diagnostic and therapeutic services. With technologies like 3D mammography, breast MRI, and genomic testing, as well as innovations like a “one-stop breast clinic” for same-day diagnostics, the centre addresses patient needs holistically.
For other types of cancer, Mandaya has also developed an Advanced Cancer Center, equipped with cutting-edge medical technologies such as radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, and a digital PET/CT scan. This makes it one of the most comprehensive cancer centres in Indonesia and even in Southeast Asia.
Beyond clinical care, it emphasises patient empowerment with initiatives like personalised gift boxes and “graduation” ceremonies for treatment completion.
At the same time, Dr Ben also launched the Mandaya Liver Center, the first of its kind in Indonesia. This multidisciplinary centre manages liver diseases ranging from fatty liver to liver cancer. It offers advanced minimally invasive procedures rarely available in Indonesia, such as radiofrequency and microwave ablation, TACE, SBRT, and complex surgeries.
Mandaya’s patient volumes have surged by 38% in 2024 amidst the implementation of these innovative centres, reflecting the growing trust of Indonesian patients.
Meanwhile, the CEO’s leadership has also driven MRHP to remarkable financial success, achieving positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation within five months and positive net profit within 13 months of operation. Under his guidance, MRHP has expanded from a team of 50 to over 800 employees, including more than 170 specialists across over 70 disciplines.
“[Dr Ben’s] ability to overcome challenges, innovate through centres of excellence, and drive growth has transformed Mandaya Hospital Group and set a new standard for healthcare in Indonesia. His achievements and impact make him a deserving recipient of the Asian Management Excellence Award 2025: Executive of the Year in Healthcare,” the company said.
