UM Specialist Centre honoured at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026 for integrated healthcare technology ecosystem
Through the digital ecosystem, it has maintained strong bed occupancy rates and zero ward closures during upgrades and has achieved RM293m revenue in 2025.
Quaternary hospital UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) won the Digital - Healthcare Technology category at the Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2026 for successfully accelerating its digital transformation by implementing an end-to-end intelligent patient flow system and the country’s first fully integrated smart ward, QWard.
At the forefront of its intelligent patient flow system is the integration between its QMed Kiosk and the Q Care mobile application, forming a cohesive digital front door for patients and redefining how they experience healthcare services from arrival to discharge.
QMed Kiosk transforms the traditional registration process. New patients obtain queue numbers
directly at the kiosk through guided digital prompts, whilst existing patients perform a self-check-in and registration, then proceed directly to their consultation waiting areas. The streamlined process shortens waiting time, improves patient satisfaction, and enables better manpower optimisation at the front office.
On the other hand, the QCare App empowers patients with comprehensive digital control. It allows patients to book appointments, access medical information, monitor bills and outstanding payments, make digital payments for self-paying patients, receive real-time queue updates, and obtain appointment reminders. It also supports multi-dependent management, allowing families to link elderly parents and children under a single user profile.
It removes reliance on physical appointment cards and reduces confusion regarding consultant schedules and clinic locations.
This transformation is anchored by QWard, which operates at ward level, embedding digital infrastructure directly into inpatient workflows and daily clinical operations. It enhances bedside care through structured digital documentation, real-time task coordination, and improved multidisciplinary communication.
The smart ward streamlines nursing workflows, reducing manual charting and minimising documentation errors. Clinical teams benefit from clearer visibility of patient status, enabling faster response times and more coordinated decision-making. It also supports efficient medication tracking, task delegation and discharge planning, strengthening patient safety and operational precision whilst improving inpatient experience.
Through these major digital innovations, UMSC has sustained a strong bed occupancy rate at 85% to 92%. It has also maintained zero ward closures during infrastructure upgrades. Financially, revenue has grown to RM293m in 2025, reflecting strengthened service capacity, as well as improved patient throughput and confidence in technology-enabled care delivery.
“This integrated framework provides a foundation for future advancements, including artificial intelligence diagnostics, predictive scheduling, and expanded telehealth capabilities. By combining intelligent patient flow systems with Malaysia’s first fully integrated smart ward of 16 beds at Berlian ward, UMSC continues to set new benchmarks in digital healthcare excellence,” the hospital said.
