Sarawak Shell Berhad takes home two wins at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025
Its projects exemplify innovation, effectiveness, and dynamism, making a significant impact on the industry.
Sarawak Shell Berhad received two major accolades at the prestigious Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025 for the remarkable innovations in its Shell Malaysia Upstream operations, for Ground Robot Technology, as well as its Construction Visualisation One Stop Shop project.
Revolutionising offshore safety and efficiency
The company’s Upstream operations have successfully deployed advanced robotic technology on its offshore unmanned platform, significantly enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
The ground robot, equipped with a suite of sophisticated tools, including a zoom inspection camera, LED lighting, drive camera, microphone with sound spectrum, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) for autonomous navigation, gas detector, and thermal IR camera, is designed to operate in hazardous environments and is protected against dust and water (IP67).
The use of LiDAR technology allows the robot to navigate autonomously, providing comprehensive surveillance without manual control. Meanwhile, the integration of various sensors enables the robot to detect a wide range of potential issues, enhancing the platform's overall safety and reliability.
The robot's IP67 rating also ensures it can operate effectively in harsh offshore environments, maintaining functionality despite exposure to dust and water.
Sarawak Shell Berhad’s deployment of the ground robot has markedly reduced operator exposure to safety and operational risks. By performing detailed inspections and surveillance, the robot minimises the need for human presence in potentially dangerous areas.
It also enhances the reliability and availability of the unmanned compression platform by conducting thorough visual inspections to identify abnormalities such as lube oil spills, piping movements, mechanical seal leaks, and gas leaks, which are not detectable by conventional CCTV and re/gas detectors.
At the same time, the robot mitigates the loss of time associated with logistics between the unmanned platform and the hub platform, providing a cost-effective surveillance solution. This is particularly beneficial given the platform's significant production value.
Most importantly, the robot operates autonomously, ensuring continuous monitoring without the need for constant human intervention.
The deployment of the ground robot on the company Upstream’s offshore unmanned platform represents a significant technological advancement in the oil and gas industry. By enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, this initiative demonstrates Shell's commitment to leveraging digitalisation and robotics to drive performance.
“The initiative aligns with Sarawak Shell Berhad's strategy to drive performance in core assets through safe and efficient operations enabled by digitalisation. The deployment location was selected based on criteria such as internet connectivity, production value, and design complexity, ensuring optimal performance and integration with existing infrastructure,” the company said.
The ground robot technology has brought Sarawak Shell Berhad the win in the Robotics - Oil & Gas category.
Innovative visualisation one-stop shop
The Construction Visualisation One Stop Shop project has been designed to revolutionise how site progress is monitored and verified, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to provide near real-time visualisation and remote engineering verification.
Its core innovation lies in its ability to integrate advanced geolocation tagging and artificial intelligence, significantly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of safety and quality assessments.
At the heart of this project is a centralised data platform that streamlines access to critical information, facilitating technical discussions and decision-making processes. This platform not only improves the understanding of actual progress on-site but also enhances verification capabilities, ensuring that milestones and claims are accurately managed.
The Construction Visualisation One Stop Shop project’s impact extends beyond immediate operational benefits. By enabling remote visualisation, the project has significantly reduced the carbon footprint associated with traditional site visits and inspections.
This aligns with Sarawak Shell Berhad's commitment to sustainability and sets new standards for project management within the industry. Its success is further underscored by the positive feedback from clients, who have praised its ability to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
“The project's ability to respond to industry needs and incorporate progressive opportunities highlights its dynamic nature and long-term viability,” the company said.
Sarawak Shell Berhad’s Construction Visualisation One Stop Shop project was recognised as the recipient of the Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality - Oil & Gas category.
