Integrated energy company Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) was recognised at the inaugural Asian Management Excellence Awards for the remarkable leadership of its CEO Dannif Danusaputro and the trailblazing performance of its carbon business team, both of which have propelled the company to new heights in the past year.

Danusaputro, who won the Indonesia Executive of the Year - Renewable Energy, has demonstrated exceptional management that led to Pertamina NRE succeeding in increasing the additional installed capacity of solar power plants by 236% within the group.

He has also shifted the perspective of Pertamina NRE, as it is now seen as a company that also cares for the environment and the future of the younger generation. In 2022, he initiated various green business initiatives in collaboration with both domestic and foreign strategic partners.

For the development of clean hydrogen, Pertamina NRE collaborated with at least six strategic partners: SEMBCORP, IGNIS, TEPCO, Keppel, Chevron, and Krakatau Steel. In the nature-based solutions initiative, Pertamina NRE collaborated with Perum Perhutani. Whilst for the carbon trading initiative, Pertamina NRE signed a cooperation agreement with Pertamina Hulu Energi and Pertamina Kilang Internasional

The CEO has also pushed Pertamina NRE to incorporate ESG values in order to further his commitment to reduce carbon emissions. He has set out a goal for Pertamina NRE to help the Indonesian government achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

Danusaputro is an outstanding leader whose impact extends far beyond the scope of their official duties. He embodies the qualities and values that define Executive of the Year, making him a deserving candidate for this prestigious recognition.

Meanwhile, its carbon business team, composed of seven dedicated personnel with diverse backgrounds and one shared passion for sustainability, has achieved outstanding milestones and set new standards of excellence in the Indonesian Carbon Exchange.

Through the team’s effort, Pertamina NRE has solidified its position as the pioneer of carbon business by becoming the first carbon credits supplier at the IDX Carbon Launch. It has also successfully traded 460,000 carbon credits, demonstrating its proficiency in navigating the complexities of the carbon market. 28 companies from diverse sectors, including industry and banking, have recognised and invested in Pertamina NRE’s credits.

Facing a steep learning curve in a relatively nascent field within a short time period and challenging targets, the team has embraced the challenge of acquiring knowledge. Through seminars, research, and engagements with stakeholders, the team has swiftly adapted to the intricacies of carbon business, showcasing resilience and dedication.

“Our achievements underscore commitment to sustainability, national recognition, and emergence of the Indonesian carbon market. Through dedication, learning, and collective effort, we have not only met but exceeded expectations, positioning ourselves as the best team of the year in Indonesia,” Dannif said.

Pertamina NRE's carbon business team took home the win in the Indonesia Team of the Year - Renewable Energy category.
