These products are meant to provide access to those who would otherwise resort to informal lenders. The majority of lower-income Filipinos usually go to informal lenders or loan sharks who do not ask for many requirements for loans to get approved. Since some of these lenders are unregulated and unlicensed, the borrowers' security is put at risk by being subjected to high-interest rates, unfair collection practices, and risk of data breaches.
