NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan wins for animation storytelling at Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+ Awards 2026

The animation centres on a rural swordsman whose journey emphasises discipline, experience, and late-stage mastery.

Representing “From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman” production committee, NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan received the Animation Story Telling - Japan category at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+ Awards 2026. The project introduced a middle-aged protagonist in place of the typical youthful lead, presenting a different perspective on progression within the fantasy genre.

The series centres on Beryl Gardenant, a rural dojo instructor whose routine is disrupted after reconnecting with a former student now serving as a commander in the Royal Order of Knights. His movement into unfamiliar settings introduces a range of interactions and challenges. Character progression is presented through accumulated experience over time. Conventional genre devices, including reincarnation and accelerated power development, are not used; instead, the narrative focuses on discipline and repetition as the basis for advancement.

Its structure draws from established Japanese pacing whilst incorporating character arcs that align with broader audience expectations. Action sequences emphasise timing and controlled physical movement. Sword combat is depicted with restraint, avoiding the exaggerated visual style often associated with the genre. This alignment between narrative direction and visual treatment remains consistent throughout the series.

Global distribution was handled through Amazon Prime Video, where the title ranked within the top 10 in more than 45 countries. Availability across multiple regions expanded its reach within the platform’s catalogue. Critical responses pointed to the narrative approach and character focus as differentiating factors.

The project began as a web novel before extending into light novels, manga adaptations, and related formats. Circulation surpassed 10 million copies by 2026. A second season is scheduled for release in July, continuing the storyline within the same framework.
