CLD, Climate Group launch SG’s first market-wide concrete benchmark

The framework will guide the industry in choosing lower-carbon options.

CapitaLand Development and Climate Group’s ConcreteZero initiative have launched the ‘Concrete Data for Concrete Action’ benchmark, Singapore’s first market-wide reference for measuring concrete’s carbon footprint.

The benchmark establishes a baseline for the embodied carbon intensity of concrete supplied in the country, providing the construction sector with a shared reference point for the first time.

It is designed to enable the value chain to identify and select lower-carbon options.

“As the country's first standardised measurement framework for concrete, it gives industry the transparency needed to make informed decisions about low-carbon materials,” said Mike Pierce, Executive Director, Systems Change at Climate Group.

The guide was developed using verified environmental data collected from concrete suppliers and represents a weighted average of the embodied carbon performance across commonly used concrete mixes.

Moreover, it draws on international standards from the UK and Australia,

The launch comes as concrete accounts for roughly 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, while the broader built environment contributes nearly 40%. Meanwhile, Singapore imports most of its construction materials.

The framework draws on international standards from the UK and Australia, adapted for Singapore’s market to ensure regional relevance and global comparability.
