S&J International Enterprise wins at the Asian Technology Excellence Awards for its sunscreen products

This is anchored in the company’s research project on red rice and aqua-matte technology.

To compete in the beauty & cosmetics industry, it is important for brands to offer products that will differentiate them from their competitors to stand out in the marketplace. S&J International Enterprises Public Company Limited recognised the importance of sunscreen as it protects the skin from the sun's rays which can cause premature aging and skin cancer. Whilst its first attempt to create sunscreen was unsuccessful, it did not stop the company from creating but having the attempt to do continuously targeted to the goal of success.

This has led S&J International to the project that is anchored at its research on red rice and aqua-matte technology. The results of the project brought to the launch of its exclusive red rice ingredient that can be used for formulating an efficient sunscreen, whilst its exclusive aqua-matte technology can be applied for the provision of the light, hydrate-feel and matte-look sunscreen. The project is also emphasised SPF50+ PA++++ coral-safe sunscreens for better sun and environmental protection.

The product innovation has won S&J International the Thailand Technology Excellence Award for Design Technology - Beauty & Cosmetics trophy at the Asian Technology Excellence Awards 2023.

Mistine Aqua Base Ultra Protection Matte and Light Facial Sunscreen Pro SPF 50+ PA++++ . Formulated with red jasmine rice and aqua matte technology

S&J International’s first sunscreen under the project is the Mistine Aqua Base Ultra Protection Matte and Light Facial Sunscreen Pro SPF 50+ PA++++. Before launching of the product by the end of 2022, the company had to equip itself with an understanding of its targeted consumer needs, particularly in China where the product had been notified to be the main market.

In working on the product targeting China, the study not only considered the Chinese regulations but also the Chinese consumers’ needs and behaviour in using sunscreens, alongside the most suitable marketing strategies in the market.

S&J International came up with the concept of “Harmonizing physical, chemical and biological activities for potential sun protection, environmentally friendly and feeling good” in offering sunscreens. Its products have coral-safe physical and chemical sunscreen ingredients boosted with a natural active ingredient to provide SPF50+ PA++++ along with other natural bio-actives to protect the skin more effectively.

The product is also crafted to be lightweight, highly hydrated, and matte.

The company’s first offer under the project is from its research on red jasmine rice bran extract which was found to have the potential to absorb ultraviolet and boost SPF. The research also revealed the extract to have other biological activities. These included the effects on inhibition of free radicals, collagenase, glycation and MMP-1 production. On the contrary, the extract showed the effects on the stimulation of antioxidant enzymes and procollagen synthesis. Results from S&J International’s own research are likely to promote red rice for its efficacy in retarding premature ageing induced by UV radiations and other factors.

S&J International’s second offer meanwhile, is from its research on aqua-matte technology which explored the use of suitable emulsifier type, aqua polymer and modified sunscreen for better water solubility. Through a suitable mixing process, a balanced system of emulsion, an important factor for homogeneity and stability, is achieved. The come-out bulk texture was less intense with an aqua look leading a sunscreen product with this sensation has been highly welcome in China.

This received two awards, from the Saha Group and the Thailand Food and Drug Administration, for the outstanding innovative product.

The company’s second sunscreen formulated with red jasmine rice bran extract and aqua-matte technology came out closely. It is the Mistine Aqua Base Ultra Protection Essence Skincare Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++.

The product has the same texture as the first product but is different in some efficacies due to differently added active ingredients to serve different targets.

Lome Sun Protect Plus Ultra SPF 50+ PA++++ . Formulated with red rose rice and AerCos technology

S&J International sold over a million pieces from production orders for both sunscreens in January - June 2023, supporting Mistine sunscreen sales to reach No. 1 in China during this first half of the year. The project on red rice and technology for sun protection and skin health will continue through alteration and modification. For example, a sunscreen for a different customer that will be launched in September 2023 uses red rose rice and AerCos technology. It is the Löme Sun Protect Plus Ultra SPF50+ PA++++.
