LUMUT NAVAL SHIPYARD secures win at Malaysia National Business Awards 2025

Its new design of 11kV and outdoor switchgear control system enhanced safety, accessibility, and cost efficiency.

Lumut Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (LUNAS) was honoured with the Innovation Award - Engineering category at the Malaysia National Business Awards 2025 for its innovative approach to modernising its electrical infrastructure.

Its Yard Services Department successfully designed and developed a new 11kV Main Distribution Substation and an Outdoor Switchgear Control System, which significantly enhanced the safety aspect, accessibility, and cost efficiency.

Led by LUNAS’ Head of Electrical Maintenance and his team, the project replaced a 40-year-old switchgear system with an advanced 8-panel switchgear system designed for remote operability. By leveraging internal expertise, the team executed the project without external consultants, working in close collaboration with a Competent Engineer (CE) registered with the Energy Commission (EC) and the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), TAMCO. This approach ensured the design's validation, compliance, and refinement whilst achieving substantial cost savings and minimising operational disruptions.

A key innovation was the development of the Outdoor Switchgear Control Panel, which enables remote operations, reducing the need for personnel to enter hazardous areas such as substations. This advancement improves workplace safety by minimising exposure to risks like flashovers, fires, and other potential hazards.

Additionally, the in-house execution of the project resulted in an estimated RM300,000 cost savings from the allocated RM1.5m budget, demonstrating the team's ability to deliver high-quality solutions efficiently.

This project has modernised ageing infrastructure and strengthened operational efficiency, safety, and long-term reliability at the shipyard, showcasing LUNAS' commitment to engineering excellence and innovation in Malaysia's shipbuilding industry.
