Amazon wins the E-Commerce-Security & Safety trophy at the Middle East Technology Excellence Awards

It was recognised for its efforts in technology that helps keep people safe.

Around the world and within countries, different regulators have different compliance standards. There are also different export and import laws for different jurisdictions. At scale, across the globe, these rules create a complex, matrixed compliance process.

In this context, Amazon created one of the largest, most integrated safety and compliance programs in the world.

Amazon Middle East and North Africa applies sophisticated technology and Machine Learning to monitor items the company and third party sellers list in its stores, to root out potentially unsafe products.

Backstopping this technology are thousands of people working across scores of compliance and safety programs. They check for illegal and restricted products, monitor recall notification websites, and ensure that import, export, and safety standards are followed.

Amazon also routinely works with regulatory agencies, and the information it shares helps them identify trends, develop regulations, and determine whether actions – such as a recall - are needed.

Amazon has proactive and reactive strategies. The proactive ones apply before an item is even listed in its stores. Amazon has detailed help pages providing information to sellers and vendors about its policies and the standards and regulations they must comply with.

In addition to verifying seller identities, Amazon regularly requests safety and compliance documentation from sellers to help ensure the products they list meet the relevant product safety standards.

After a product is listed, Amazon routinely monitors its stores for potential safety concerns. These systems ingest and sort through hundreds of millions of data points in real-time. They also scan and scrape Amazon’s stores every second of the day, looking for concerning items after they are posted online. When a concern arises, the company moves quickly to protect its customers.

For these efforts, Amazon Middle East and North Africa was granted the “E-Commerce - Security & Safety” award in the recently concluded Middle East Technology Excellence Awards, hosted by  Asian Business Review.

The awards programme recognises successful groundbreaking projects, digital services, reimagined strategies, and technological initiatives in the Middle East, honouring the technology champions of the region.
