Which pet breeds are the most expensive to insure?

Southern Cross Pet Insurance paid a total of AU$30m in claims last year.

The most expensive claims paid for New Zealanders' pets include traumatic injuries, cancer, and fractures, Southern Cross Pet Insurance revealed.

The insurer also unveiled that it paid out a total of AU$29.95m in claims in 2023, with some claims in excess of AU$10,000. Presently, the country estimates that there are 4.35 million pets.

Southern Cross Pet Insurance shared its top 10 insured breeds and highest claims for 2023.

Labradors, Cavoodles, and Golden Retrievers top the list for dogs, while Domestic Short Hair, Ragdoll, and Domestic Medium Hair cats make the cut for felines.

CEO Anthony McPhail notes a surge in insurance for popular breeds, emphasising the importance of pet health coverage. 

Pet care costs, including routine check-ups and unexpected events, can be substantial.
