PETRONAS lands two wins at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025
Its solutions have empowered operators to enable the effective monitoring of composite repairs’ integrity and proactively manage flexible pipeline health.
Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) clinched two titles at the prestigious Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards 2025 for its Composite Repair Integrity Management System - Digital Solutions (CoRIMS DS) that has provided guidance and direction in the integrity management of composite repairs, as well as its Integrated Pipeline Integrity Assurance Solutions (I-PIMS) 2.0 that has revolutionised digital integrity management for flexible pipelines.
CoRIMS DS has been established as a one-stop centre or centralised platform aimed at addressing all composite repair users' pain points. The pain points include the need for a data repository platform, an online design validation tool, online repair integrity monitoring, a risk-based inspection approach, a systematic methodology to manage composite repair re-classification or lifetime extension, and in-situ data visualisation via Smart Tagging System (STS). With this system, all operational challenges relating to composite repair work processes can be addressed with improvements to efficiency, pace, automation, and centralised data.
All modules are automated and enable the users to conduct the verification and assessment activities for the composite repair system. These digital modules are going to enable the users to make effective decision-making whilst maintaining risks as low as reasonably practicable, potentially facilitating the users to improve their efficiency to avoid asset premature failure and production disruption.
“CoRIMS DS is a first-of-its-kind digital solution aimed to be a one-stop centre or portal in managing composite repair group-wide for effective integrity management and avoidance of production disruption due to any failure of composite repair that will generate a value creation of more than RM60m for the business,” the company said.
Moving forward, the solution is to be expanded to all PETRONAS operating units and offered to external organisations beyond PETRONAS.
This success has earned the company the win in the Facility Management Technology - Oil & Gas category.
Meanwhile, I-PIMS 2.0 is an innovative, cloud-based platform designed to manage pipeline integrity challenges, offering a one-stop solution for comprehensive pipeline management. This version upgrade incorporates unbonded flexible pipeline material. Building on the success of its previous version, it enhances pipeline risk assessment for flexible pipeline systems through advanced analytics. It also empowers operators to proactively manage flexible pipeline health, reduce risks, and optimise resources.
The solution’s core strength lies in its lab-test-based, data-driven insights into pipeline integrity, using a robust set of descriptors, industry standards, and risk-based evaluations of pipeline failure mechanisms. This enables accurate risk ratings and early identification of potential threats, reducing the likelihood of pipeline failure.
It leverages historical failure data and industry experience to assess threats and their impact on pipeline components. It then provides a comprehensive Integrity Management Plan with tailored recommendations for inspection, monitoring, and maintenance activities, minimising risks to the lowest practicable level.
I-PIMS 2.0 has achieved remarkable results, boosting process cycle efficiency by 77% and saving PETRONAS RM23m as of 2024. It could also potentially enable cost avoidance of more than RM500m by proactively preventing flexible pipeline failures through improved risk assessment, inspection, and maintenance.
The adoption of PETRONAS’s solution marks a significant shift in the industry, transforming how pipeline operators assess and manage flexible pipeline integrity. The system provides visibility into pipeline conditions and allows for timely risk identification, resource prioritisation, and proactive decision-making.
“It symbolises the future of flexible pipeline management—where flexible pipeline’s data-driven decision-making, risk reduction, and cost optimisation converge seamlessly for sustainable business success,” the company said.
I-PIMS brought PETRONAS this award under the Digital - Oil & Gas category in the prestigious event.
