Malaysia LNG takes home two wins at Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards

Its STELLAR 2.0 solution has enhanced the company’s advisory capabilities, making recommendations both reliable and actionable.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) manufacturer Malaysia LNG brought home two wins at the prestigious Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards for its STELLAR 2.0 solution that evolves the advisory system into an AI-driven, closed-loop optimisation platform.

STELLAR 2.0 emerges as a response to feedback from key personas, which are process engineers and panel operators on the ground. Its pre-cooldown phase, which lowers equipment temperatures during start up process, is now optimised with automated adjustments to key parameters like flow rates, pressures, and temperatures, ensuring peak performance.

At the same time, the solution standardises procedures by providing a structured framework with predefined prerequisites, real-time monitoring, and automated alerts for deviations.

The six-month development journey has been highly collaborative, involving the company’s automation, digitalisation & optimisation team, process technologists, operations team, IT-OT experts, and data scientists to ensure the solution is aligned with real-world needs whilst adhering to cybersecurity standards.

Since its implementation, STELLAR 2.0 has improved pre-cooldown duration hours by reducing up to 56% in comparison to the manual pre-cooldown processes. It has also significantly streamlined plant startups, saving valuable time and resources. The solution has also contributed to a 35.5% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by optimising gas usage during startups.

“STELLAR 2.0 has redefined the relationship between operators and technology. With real-time feedback loops validating the product's recommendations, trust amongst operators has dramatically increased, driving user adoption,” the company said.

Its earlier open-loop implementation provided accurate insights but lacked mechanisms to validate outcomes, leaving operators questioning the recommendations.

Malaysia LNG clinched the prestigious award in the AI - Oil & Gas and the Automation - Oil & Gas categories.
