Igus introduces fully recyclable bike components

Sustainable bike components made from recycled plastics.

At the forefront of Igus' sustainability initiatives is the introduction of recyclable and fully recyclable bike components, where they utilise two key approaches: the use of virgin plastics and recycled plastics in manufacturing.

Christopher Holler, International Industry Manager at Igus, said that by offering both options, Igus provides customers with a sustainable alternative, emphasising a cradle-to-cradle approach to product development.

The goal is to create bike components that are not only eco-friendly but also maintenance-free, rust-free, and corrosion-free, setting a new standard in the industry.

Initial feedback from customers has been positive, with the recognition that these components represent a lifestyle choice aligned with sustainability values.

While acknowledging that the components may not be as rigid as traditional bike parts, Holler emphasised that their purpose lies in promoting a sustainable lifestyle rather than catering to hardcore commuters.

In addition to using recycled plastics, Igus explores innovative approaches to sustainability in bike manufacturing. One such approach involves the development of injection-moulded plastic parts to replace traditional aluminium frames.

Holler explained that these modular frame systems offer a fully recyclable alternative with a lower CO2 footprint compared to aluminium or carbon frames. This initiative underscores Igus' dedication to pushing the boundaries of sustainable innovation in the biking industry.
