Taiwan ascends as IT hardware powerhouse

Taiwan's initiatives bolster its global IT hardware production ranking.

Taiwan has emerged as the world’s second-largest producer of IT hardware, a feat attributed to a combination of government support, skilled labour, and strategic supply chain manoeuvres, according to Derek Huang, Deputy Managing Director and Head of Capital Markets & Investment Services at Colliers Taiwan.

Huang said that several key factors have contributed to Taiwan's rise. "First of all, Taiwan has plenty of well-educated parents with reasonable costs," he stated, highlighting the island's robust education system and cost-effective talent pool.

Additionally, the Taiwanese government has played a pivotal role by offering substantial incentives. These include subsidies, tax breaks, and provision of land for high-tech industries, all aimed at nurturing the growth of the IT sector.

Huang noted, "Taiwan has the most comprehensive supply chain in the IT sector." This advantage has been further enhanced by the return of many high-tech manufacturers to Taiwan from China due to changing interests and policies since 2019.

The "Invest in Taiwan" programs, launched by the Taiwanese government in 2019, have been instrumental in accelerating investment in the high-tech sector. Huang revealed that "the progress is to attract investment amounts over 2.2 trillion Taiwan dollars being the IT sector, which is a long 70 billion US dollars."

These initiatives have streamlined bureaucratic processes, facilitated setting up operations in Taiwan, and attracted companies moving back to Taiwan, thereby fueling further growth in the IT industry.

Taiwan is also positioning itself as a leader in smart and net-zero carbon trends. Committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the country leverages its expertise in semiconductor and AI industries to develop energy-efficient technologies.

These technologies are aimed at advancing smart grids, electric vehicles, and other innovations, underscoring Taiwan's commitment to sustainable development alongside technological advancement.

Huang's insights shed light on Taiwan's multifaceted strategy for securing its position as a global leader in IT hardware production. Through government support, investment in skilled labour, and strategic supply chain restructuring, Taiwan has not only enhanced its competitiveness in the IT sector but also positioned itself as a key player in the push towards energy efficiency and carbon neutrality.
