Philippine government agencies urged to adopt solar power

They are given three years to install their initial solar energy supply.

The Philippines’ Inter-Agency Energy Efficiency and Conservation Committee urged government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, state universities and colleges, and local government units to install solar panels on their buildings.

In a resolution, the committee gave government agencies three years to install an initial supply of solar panels that could meet at least 20% of their electricity requirements or any equivalent renewable energy technology based on the highest monthly kilowatt-hour (kWh) billing demand of previous years.

Those that will install solar panels or any equivalent renewable energy technology not exceeding 100kW would be eligible to be Qualified End-Users and may enter into a net-metering deal with a distribution utility, the Department of Energy (DOE) said in a statement.

The DOE-Energy Utilization Management Bureau will assist government entities with the technical requirements to install solar panels on their buildings.

Solar power use is part of the Government Energy Management Programme compliance which encourages government entities to cut their electricity consumption by at least 10%.
