Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission lauded in 2 categories at Malaysia Management Excellence Awards 2024

MCMC took home trophies for Health and Wellness Initiative of the Year - Non-Profit Organisation and Innovator of the Year - Non-Profit Organisation.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been celebrated at the prestigious Malaysia Management Excellence Awards 2024, winning Health and Wellness Initiative of the Year - Non-Profit Organisation and Innovator of the Year - Non-Profit Organisation.

The organisation earned recognition for prioritising employee well-being, whilst its Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Dr Murugappan, was honoured for his innovative leadership.

MCMC’s comprehensive workplace strategy focusses on fostering a supportive and inclusive culture that enhances employees’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being alongside career development.

Key initiatives include the annual Health & Wellness Week, which offers free physical and mental health screenings, fitness classes and nutrition-focused meal preparation, and massage reflexology sessions, in collaboration with Persatuan Pembangunan Ekonomi Orang Buta Malaysia to support visually impaired individuals.

MCMC also adopted MetaHRise, a metaverse-based wellness tool for immersive relaxation experiences using virtual reality games and guided breathing exercises. This innovation was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the First Multiplayer Metaverse Induction Programme.

“Our initiatives have significantly boosted employee satisfaction and organisational performance. The Employee Engagement Survey indicates an impressive engagement index of 70%, well above Malaysia’s average of 36%. Additionally, 87% of employees report feeling aligned with MCMC’s objectives,” shared Haryati Suradi, Head of Human Resource Division at MCMC.

Other achievements include a 97% employee retention rate, attributed to flexible work arrangements like hot-desking and co-working spaces, and recognition programmes, including Long Service Awards and Achievement Incentives, to foster appreciation and loyalty.

Looking ahead, MCMC plans to integrate advanced technologies for remote collaboration, enhance workspace designs, and promote agile work practices, ensuring its strategies remain effective and impactful.

Recognised for his visionary approach to human resources, Dr Murugappan, MCMC’s CHRO, was named Innovator of the Year, highlighting his exceptional 30-year career and pioneering contributions to HR. Initially trained as an accountant, Dr Murugappan transitioned into HR through a chance role managing a total rewards portfolio, sparking a passion that redefined his career.

He holds 23 global certifications and a PhD in Digital Leadership, exemplifying his commitment to continuous learning. Amongst his qualifications are Certified CHRO, Wharton Business School, US; Project Management Professional (PMP)®, US; Certified Lean Sigma Black Belt (CLSBB), US; and Global Remuneration Professional (GRP), US.

One of his key contributions is the Digital Transformation Leadership Black Box (DTLBB©) framework, which identifies leadership traits critical for successful organisational transformation.

Dr Murugappan’s work merges technology with human connection, exemplified by MetaHRise, which reimagines workforce engagement in the digital era. His initiatives have consistently earned accolades, including the Malaysia Book of Records recognition in 2024.

The Malaysia Management Excellence Awards, presented by the Asian Business Review, celebrate the country’s most outstanding leaders, teams, and initiatives driving tangible organisational success, with MCMC’s recognition underscoring its commitment to excellence and innovation in the non-profit sector.
