SunProtected tests local storage against cloud subscriptions
The Taiwanese company is exploring Philippine distribution as recurring cloud fees and data privacy create an opening for alternative backup models.
Local data storage providers are testing whether concerns around recurring cloud fees and control of sensitive information can create a viable alternative market alongside established cloud backup services.
Speaking during Taiwan Expo 2026, Walter Chang, Sales Director at SunProtected Technology, said the company is assessing the Philippines for potential distribution partnerships before determining its market-entry strategy.
SunProtected’s Memory Capture system stores information locally on a microSD card and supports iOS, macOS and Windows. The technology can be integrated into chargers and power banks, allowing devices to back up information automatically while charging.
Chang said the proposition is aimed at customers that want greater control over sensitive information whilst avoiding continuing cloud-storage payments.
“What we want to offer is convenience and efficiency to customers who care about privacy, who don’t want to store their sensitive data in the cloud,” Chang said.
Unlike subscription-based cloud storage, the hardware is purchased upfront and uses removable local storage. Its software allows users to select which information is backed up and enable encryption across different devices.
The larger challenge is distribution. SunProtected has not yet established its Philippine go-to-market model and is using its initial market assessment to identify potential channel partners.
“I need a partner who really understands the value and can bring our value to the market,” Chang explained.
For distributors, the commercial test is whether privacy and subscription costs provide enough differentiation for local-storage hardware to secure a place alongside established cloud services.
